Understanding Stopping, Parking and Loading signs and lines

posted on 26/01/2021

Understanding the parking, waiting and loading signs and lines on the road will help you to answer theory test questions correctly, as well as avoid being fined for stopping or parking in the wrong places once you have passed your driving test.

Firstly, you need to know the difference meant by the wording ‘no waiting or parking’ and ‘no stopping’

No Waiting or Parking means that you CAN stop to drop off or pick up a passenger. But you cannot stay there.

No Stopping means that you cannot stop at all.

Single White Line – No pavement = No Parking

This is the single white line painted on the left edge of the road.

It simply means ‘edge of carriageway’

If there is no pavement on the road, then it’s illegal to park on that road.

Single Yellow Lines

This is a single yellow line painted on the left edge of the road.

It means that waiting or parking is restricted on this road.

The times that you are not allowed to wait, or park will be shown on a nearby sign

Double Yellow Lines

These are two yellow lines painted on the left edge of the road.

They mean that there is no waiting or parking on this road at any time.

Exceptions:

Blue Badge holders can usually park on double and single lines for up to 3-hours.

Check for local signs for more information.

You MUST display your badge.

Single Red Lines

This is a single red line painted on the left edge of the road.

Double Red Lines (Clearway)

These are two red lines painted on the left edge of the road.

They mean that there is no stopping on this road at any time.

Exceptions:

You can stop on a single or double red line to pick up or drop off a Blue Badge holder.

You must display your badge.

You must move away again promptly.

Restricted Parking Sign

It means that there are parking and stopping restrictions on this road

These are yellow lines painted onto the kerb

Clearway Sign

The times that you are not allowed to load will be shown on a nearby sign

Double Loading Lines
